On Saturday, February 14th, Lincoln Community High School and Railer Nation lost a beloved friend of the Railer Basketball Program with the passing of Mr. Steve Sauer. For over 35 years, Steve was the “Voice of the Railsplitters” serving as public address announcer for basketball and football games and was a trusted and familiar sound within Lincoln and Logan County for decades.

A respected educator, Mr. Sauer devoted nearly 40 years to his students at Lincoln Community High School. A historian at heart, he challenged young people to view history from a positive perspective and saw current political and social issues not as a problem, but rather as an opportunity to grow and learn to better shape our world.

After his retirement from teaching, he continued to share his voice with the Lincoln and Logan County communities. If you attended a Railer football game in the Fall, a Railer basketball game here at Roy S, the Grand March at Prom in the Spring, any number of community fundraisers and events…or if were simply scanning the dial and tuned into the local radio station…chances are it was Steve Sauer’s warm and distinct voice that you were hearing. He had a knack for knowing just what to say and when to say it. His style, delivery and energy are what helped shape the tradition of Lincoln Community High School sports into what we know and love today. Simply put…nobody could do it like he could.

Mr. Sauer inspired countless students and provided the soundtrack to our Friday and Saturday nights for decades. Tonight, we dim our lights and this microphone will go silent for a few moments as we continue to pray for the Sauer family and take pause with a moment of silence, as we pay tribute to Mr. Steve Sauer.
